Mayland Learning Lab’s TABE services benefit BLET Grad

David Buchanan

Mayland’s BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training) and EMT (Emergency Management Training) students are all required to complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) which is administered FREE of charge in Mayland’s Learning Lab during regular class hours, Monday through Friday.  Before students can enroll in either of these two programs, they must achieve passing scores on the TABE.
Mayland BLET graduate and Mitchell County Sheriff Deputy, David Buchanan said, “The Learning Lab instructors are patient, courteous, professional, and encouraging.  They made every effort to put me at ease when I went to the Lab to take the required TABE exam.”  Deputy Buchanan is the full time Mitchell County Courthouse Security Officer.
David shared that he grew up in Yancey County and had great loving parents.  He and wife Amanda enjoy spending quality family time with their three children.  They attend Windom Baptist Church.  Deer hunting and fishing are two of David’s favorite hobbies.
David said he had always desired a law enforcement career.  Following 16 years in the trucking industry, David chose to enroll in the BLET classes at Mayland Community College (MCC).
“Every instructor was great!  They push you; you earn everything you get in PT (Physical Training) class,” said David.  “I enjoyed all my learning experiences at Mayland; I would do it all again, and I recommend MCC to anyone seeking to further their education and prepare for a new or better career.”
Buchanan says he is enjoying his courthouse security position with Mitchell County Sheriff’s office.  The Clerk of Court Staff all said, “Deputy David Buchanan is doing a top-notch job; we are so thankful to have him here with us.”
