GED studies at Mayland Community College
The Mayland Community College Basic Skills Program offers free GED classes, providing instruction in reading, writing, and math skills to help students prepare for the tests of General Educational Development (GED).
These classes are available to adults age 18 and above or for students as young as 16 with notarized documentation from parents and public school officials.
Mayland is also an official GED Testing Site, offering GED testing at the Main Campus in Mitchell County as well as the Avery and Yancey Learning Centeres, along with the Old Mitchell County Courthouse in Bakersville.
Students who successfully complete the GED test batteries are awarded a high school credential, which may provide opportunities to:
- Pursue higher education
- Obtain a job or job promotion
- Achieve personal goals

- AVERY COUNTY: MCC Avery Learning Center in Newland
- MITCHELL COUNTY: Historic Mitchell County Courthouse in Bakersville &
MCC Main Campus in Spruce Pine - YANCEY COUNTY: MCC Yancey Learning Center in Burnsville
