Continuing Education at Mayland Community College
Continuing Education is committed to the concept of life-long learning. It is the purpose of Mayland Community College to provide an opportunity for citizens to develop their fullest potential in whatever vocational, intellectual or cultural areas they desire. Extension courses offered through Continuing Education are designed to prepare students for occupational opportunities or work toward self-improvement. Continuing education courses are offered at various locations throughout Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey counties. We welcome requests for courses and suggestions for providing improved services to the three-county area.

NEW Continuing Education HVAC Program a Success!

Mayland's Continuing Education Department offered its first HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) certification class during the summer. This class filled up quickly with 15 students and an existing wait list. Of our 15 students, 7 of them chose to sit for the NC State Refrigeration Board Certification Exam. ALL 7 students received state certification of some level. Four of those students received the highest level possible offered by the Board which was Universal Certification. We are very proud of our Continuing Education students and have started a second HVAC class which will run through January of 2011. With the completion of this 120 hour in-depth course we hope our students will gain confidence to continue to pursue their education, have new job opportunities, and improve their overall quality of life!
A special thank you to our Instructor and MCC Maintenance member, Russell Silvers, for doing a great job with this program. We hope to develop this successful program into a curriculum program in the near future to provide even more opportunities to our community.
If you see these HVAC students in your communities or on our campus be sure and congratulate them on a job well done!
Course Repetition Policy:
To comply with the North Carolina Department of Community College Repetition Policy, any student, including senior citizens, who take occupational extension courses more than twice within a five-year period must pay the full cost of the course. This is based on the amount of funds generated by a formula used in reporting student membership hours. Fire, Law, and Emergency Services personnel, taking courses for certification are exempt from this policy.
