Continuing Education at Mayland Community College

Continuing Education is committed to the concept of life-long learning. It is the purpose of Mayland Community College to provide an opportunity for citizens to develop their fullest potential in whatever vocational, intellectual or cultural areas they desire. Extension courses offered through Continuing Education are designed to prepare students for occupational opportunities or work toward self-improvement. Continuing education courses are offered at various locations throughout Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey counties. We welcome requests for courses and suggestions for providing improved services to the three-county area.

Project Skill Up

Tobacco Trust Fund

Project Skill-Up is funded by the NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission to support short-term occupational skills training for NC residents who reside in areas adversely impacted by changes in the tobacco industry.
Training must be in high growth industries. Primary consideration is given to students from families directly affected by the decline of the tobacco industry. However, all students who meet the guidelines listed below are eligible to apply and are encouraged to do so. Costs for books and other expenses related to education (if any) will not be covered by this grant. Approved courses can be identified through reading descriptions found in this brochure.

To be eligible, a person must:
• Be a permanent resident of Avery, Mitchell, or Yancey Counties
• Be 18 years of age or older
• Be unemployed or under-employed(less than 20 hours per week).
• Students must complete a Career Readiness Certification (CRC) assessment and test before receiving certification in occupational programs

Customized Training

Developing Classes to Help Productivity

The Customized Training Program (CTP) provides training and services for new, expanding and existing business and industry in North Carolina.
The state pioneered Customized Training fifty years ago and is consistently recognized as having one of the most effective training programs in the nation. The decision of a business or industry to locate, expand, or remain in NC is influenced by the presence of a well-trained workforce. The CTP was developed in response to this need.
An example of this successful partnership was an Industrial Electrical Maintenance class held this fall. Sixteen electricians and maintenance staff from Altec Industries, PRC Industries, BRP Inc., Hickory Springs Manufacturing, and New Buck Corporation participated in the training. Unlike standard residential electrical courses, this class provided instruction on industrial electronics and electrical systems. As a result, students were given the skills to better perform their jobs and make the factory operate more efficiently.
The CTP is designed to react quickly to the needs of businesses and respect the confidential nature of information within those businesses. Through the CTP, Mayland Community College provides services including job profiling, assessment, and pre-employment training. Post-hire, technical and "soft" skills training are also offered at no cost to the company. CTP does what is needed to assist companies in locating or expanding operations in the Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey County areas, and prepares the workforce with skills essential for successful employment in industry.

Study at a time that is most convenient for you, without the need to attend a class on campus. Choose from 100s of classes! ED2GO offers interactive quizzes, assignments, tutorials, and
online discussions are available via the World Wide Web to supplement the lessons. All you need to get started is Internet access and a web browser. Any additional requirements will be listed in the course description. YOU MUST REGISTER AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE START DATE. Start dates for spring: 1/18, 2/15, 3/21, 4/8, 5/16.

Course Repetition Policy:

To comply with the North Carolina Department of Community College Repetition Policy, any student, including senior citizens, who take occupational extension courses more than twice within a five-year period must pay the full cost of the course. This is based on the amount of funds generated by a formula used in reporting student membership hours. Fire, Law, and Emergency Services personnel, taking courses for certification are exempt from this policy.
