Digital Photography for Products and Business (24 Hours)

Want to learn how to use your digital camera’s many functions and features? Learn about natural light, color, composition and the secrets to taking great photos. Class will also discuss using photos to promote a product or business. You will need to bring a digital SLR camera or an advanced point and shoot camera that has some manual options (and the operation manual, if available) to class.

This course will introduce smart phone users to new methods of managing and marketing their business. Electrical Contractor License Renewal (8 Hours)

This course is designed to provide electrical contractors with updated information on the latest changes in the National Electric Code, NC Electric Code, and local utility company requirements. When offered during fiscal year 2011-2012, this course meets the requirements of the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors for 8 contact hours of continu¬ing education credit. This course is not sponsored by the Board. Students should bring a current copy of the NC Electrical Code Book to class. A one hour lunch break will be given.

Welding Skills for the Farm (24 Hours) NEW!

Learn the basic skills of stick and mig welding as well as the cutting process needed to repair broken equipment and tools on the farm. Understanding safe welding practices will be covered through lecture, demonstration, and practical applications.

General Interest Classes

NC Concealed Carry Handgun (10 Hours)

This class provides the training and certificate needed to apply for a handgun permit at any Sheriff’s Department in NC. You must be at least 21 and a NC resident. To attend this class, you cannot have been convicted of any felonies or misdemeanor violent crimes. Bring 100 rounds of ammunition, a handgun, and holster to the firing range portion of the class ONLY. Bring a bag lunch. Space is limited so pre-register early. From 1:00-6:00 PM will be the firing range portion of the class, so do not bring firearms into the MCC campus. A fee will be required by the Sheriff’s Office in order to register for the permit.

Jewelry Design & Creation for Beginners (10 Hours)

Learn to produce four simple but lovely chain maille jewelry items for gifts or personal wear, including 3 pairs of earrings and 1 bracelet. Students will need to bring a pair of jewelry pliers, a work mat, and small Ziploc baggies. Student will have an opportunity to order additional materials the first day of class. Pre-registration and payment are required to reserve your spot!

Intermediate Jewelry Design (10 Hours)

Learn to create several beautiful, unusual jewelry pieces using intermediate chain maille techniques. Projects will include making bracelets, earrings, and a pendant. To register, students should have taken beginning level chain maille jewelry design, or have prior experience with weaving chain maille. Students will need to provide or purchase supplies. Students will be given the opportunity to order all necessary materials at wholesale prices during the first class meeting. The first class will meet for 1 hour; all other classes will meet for 3 hours. You must be present the first class to get in this course.

Couponing: The Great Shopping Game! (8 Hours)

Learn how to make a coupon binder, organize and store coupon inserts, explain the coupon jargon, and local stores coupon policies. This class will also teach students when local stores sales change, how to get the best use out of your coupons, and easy ways to find or get coupon inserts. Instructor will share some of the best websites and the coupon-sale matching websites. This class teaches you how to know when you are really getting a good deal and how you can actually make money using coupons. A list of supplies will be available the first day of class.

Marbled Paper Forming (8 Hours)

Marbling is a form of printing that goes back hundreds of years. Color is dropped on a medium and swirled with a variety of tools to create different designs and the print is made. This class will create unique pieces of marbled paper using food coloring, shaving cream, and card stock. Marbled paper forming is ideal for scrapbooking, handmade cards, origami boxes, and many other things. This class will explore some of these options. Supplies will be available the first night of class or can be purchased beforehand.

Calligraphy: The Art of Italic Writing (12 Hours)

Create written works in elegant calligraphy. Students will learn the basic strokes of italic lettering. Each student will need to bring a broad felt tip calligraphic pen (2.5 mm suggested), ruler, pencil, and unlined white copier paper to each meeting. A folder for student work is suggested.

Creative Writing (24 Hours)

Have you ever read a book and thought to yourself, “I could have written that better?” Do you want to be the next Ernest Hemingway? Then Creative Writing is the course for you. This class will teach the basics of well written, strong short fiction and will give you the building blocks to writing. Students will write at least one short story, novella, or part of a novel that will be read by the entire class and given feedback on.
