Do you have your own MacBook Air or MacBook Pro? Are you a newcomer to the Mac world? If you answered yes to these two questions, then this class is for you. Learn basic skills from turning on your Mac and setting your own preferences to setting up an e-mail account and Apple ID. Participants will also learn keyboard and mouse tricks to make Mac use faster and smarter. No previous experience needed; however, you will need to bring your own device with you to class.

This course is designed to provide electri¬cal contractors with updated information on the latest changes in the National Electric Code, NC Electric Code, and local utility company requirements. When offered during fiscal year 2011-2012, this course meets the requirements of the North Caro¬lina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors for 8 contact hours of continu¬ing education credit. Auto Safety Inspection (8 Hours)

This course prepares auto technicians and service personnel as safety inspector for motor vehicles. It includes regulations and test inspection procedures and is taught to insure that the student understands the rules and regulations can inspect a vehicle properly and can successfully pass qualification exams for certification as a safety auto inspector at a licensed inspection station. Welding Skills for the Farm (24 Hours)

Learn the basic skills of stick and mig welding as well as the cutting process needed to repair broken equipment and tools on the farm. Understanding safe welding practices will be covered through lecture, demonstration, and practical applications. (No Class Nov. 27)

NEW! Create your own Blacksmithing Forge (16 Hours)

Students will leave this class with a table top (12” x 13”) , gas forge suitable for small blacksmithing projects. Topics covered will include cutting, taking, and fitting metal using a variety of welding tech¬niques. Basic welding skills recommended but not required. A supply fee of $80 will need to be paid directly to instructor the first day of class. Students will also have the option of purchasing additional forge regulators, hoses & fittings at an additional cost.

Learn the skills necessary to become employed as an entry level heating and air conditioning technician. Course focuses on the operating principles of heating and cooling systems with emphasis on safety, theory and principles of refrigeration, types of heating/cooling systems. Raising Chickens in your Backyard (24 Hours)

Learn what it takes to maintain a backyard flock that will provide you with hours of entertainment and a healthy food staple for meat and profit. This class will cover the basics of breed selection, maintaining their general health, and how to provide containment and protection of your flock from pests and predators. You will look at the untapped poultry market in the Mayland area and what it takes to raise, process and market meat birds. Also learn about the NC State regulations for poultry farmers and how to obtain your meat handling license.

Marbled Paper Forming (8 Hours)

Marbling is a form of printing that goes back hundreds of years. Color is dropped on a medium and swirled with a variety of tools to create different designs and the print is made. This class will create unique pieces of marbled paper using food coloring, shaving cream, and card stock. Marbled paper forming is ideal for scrapbooking, handmade cards, origami boxes, and many other things. Supplies will be available the first night of class or can be purchased beforehand.

Basic Quilting Class (24 Hours)

This quilting class is designed for three types of quilters, the beginner, the novice who needs help with a project and the intermediate quilter. All you need to know before taking the class is how to wind a bobbin and thread your sewing machine. Interested in learning how to take welding to an art form? During this class you will acquire a general understanding of welding and be able to handle a torch safely and confidently. In this theory and hands on class, you will learn everything you need to know about microdermabrasion facials. You will experience crystal tip treatments and learn about different treatment options, proper procedures and technique. Brow Threading class (6 Hours)

Learn about the history and techniques used in the 6000 year old art of threading to remove unwanted hair. Students will also learn how to remove excess facial hair and create elegantly arched brows that will enhance your clients face shape. This small investment can also help increase your salons earning potential. You will need to bring to class a spool of white 100% cotton thread, tweezers, and a lash/brow brush. Class is open to licensed professionals and advanced cosmetology students.

NC Concealed Carry Handgun (10 Hours)

This class provides the training and certificate needed to apply for a handgun permit at any Sheriff’s Department in NC. You must be at least 21 and a NC resident. To attend this class, you cannot have been convicted of any felonies or misdemeanor violent crimes. Bring 100 rounds of ammunition, a handgun, and holster to the firing range portion of the class ONLY. Bring a bag lunch. Space is limited so pre-register early. From 1:00-6:00 pm will be the firing range portion of the class, so do not bring firearms into the MCC campus. A fee will be required by the Sheriff’s Office in order to register for the permit. (30 min. Lunch Break)

Defensive Driving (4 Hours)

This program trains motorists in the principles of defensive driving and is made available by the District Attorney through Mayland Community College, Mountain Professionals, Inc. and the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina. You must register on or before 4:30PM the day of the class. Class MUST have a minimum of 5 students paid & registered to make. Classes will be canceled if class minimum isn’t met. When you come to register you must have the following information ready: driver’s license, social security number and citation (ticket).There is a non-refundable $65 class registration (cash or money order only) fee. Students 16-18 years of age must have a “Dual Enrollment Form” filled out prior to receiving a certificate.

Wheel throwing, hand building, sculpture, table top ware…ideas are unlimited. Ever wanted to try the pottery wheel? Come, give it a whirl! Can you hand build beautiful, useful things out of clay? Mayland Community College offers many convenient, online courses for teachers looking to complete CEUs. Each course is 24 hours in length or 2.4 CEUs per class. Please verify acceptance of these courses for CEU renewal with your local Board of Education.
