Career Readiness Certification

North Carolina Career Readiness Certification (CRC) is a workplace credential that promotes skills and career development for individuals searching for employment. Participants are tested in Math, Reading, and Locating Information. Three levels of certification, Bronze, Silver, or Gold, are available based upon the test-taker’s score. Even with a high school diploma or GED®, the CRC credential provides additional verification that a person can handle tasks common in today’s workplace, and regional industries recognize the CRC as an excellent screening tool for applicants.

Career Readiness Certification Lab

These drop-in labs assist students in preparing for the CRC exam. This internet based training will help to improve scores in the three areas of testing; Math, Reading and Locating Information. Labs will be open on all three of Mayland’s campuses. To receive a Project Skill-UP scholarship, students are required to attend one lab day in order to complete a CRC assessment.

Project Skill-Up is funded by the NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission to support short-term occupational skills training for NC residents who reside in areas adversely impacted by changes in the tobacco industry.

Training must be in high growth industries. Primary consideration is given to students from families directly affected by the decline of the tobacco industry. However, all students who meet the guidelines listed below are eligible to apply and are encouraged to do so. Costs for books and other expenses related to education (if any) will not be covered by this grant. Approved courses can be identified through reading descriptions found in this brochure.

To be eligible, a person must:
• Be a permanent resident of Avery, Mitchell, or Yancey Counties
• Be 18 years of age or older
• Be unemployed or under-employed (less than 20 hours per week).

Students must also complete a 9 hour HRD class and a Career Readiness Certification (CRC) assessment and test before receiving certification in occupational programs.

Customized Training

Developing classes to improve productivity and encourage Economic Development

The Customized Training Program (CTP) supports the economic development efforts of the state and the region by providing training and services for new, expanding and existing business and industry in North Carolina.

North Carolina pioneered Customized Training fifty years ago and is consistently recognized as having one of the most effective training programs in the nation. The decision of a business or industry to locate, expand, or remain in NC is influenced by the presence of a well-trained workforce. The CTP was developed in response to this need.

Many local companies have taken advantage of this opportunity to improve the productivity of their operations and increase the skill level of their employees. From basic computer applications to safety training to advanced machining techniques, Customized Training can develop a training program tailored to each company’s individual needs.

The CTP is designed to react quickly to the needs of businesses and respect the confidential nature of information within those businesses. Through the CTP, Mayland Community College provides services including job profiling, assessment, and pre-employment training. Post-hire, technical and “soft” skills training are also offered at no cost to the company. CTP does what is needed to assist companies in locating or expanding operations in the Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey County areas, and prepares the workforce with skills essential for successful employment in industry.

For more information on what Mayland’s Customized Training Program offers, call 766-1297.
