Computer Basics (24 Hours)

Class is for beginners, late bloomers, and technophobes. Learn foundation skills ranging from turning on and shutting down a computer to an intro to WordPad, Internet, Clipboard, Gmail, creating, saving, and editing documents. Students will use mouse tricks and extra keys on a keyboard to work faster and smarter. No previous computer experience needed.

Electrical Contractor License Renewal (8 Hours)

This course is designed to provide electrical contractors with updated information on the latest changes in the National Electric Code, NC Electric Code, and local utility company requirements. When offered during fiscal year 2013-2014, this course meets the requirements of the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors for 8 contact hours of continuing education credit. This course is not sponsored by the Board. Students should bring a current copy of the NC Electrical Code Book to class. A one hour lunch break will be given.

Auto Safety Inspection (8 Hours)

This course prepares auto technicians and service personnel as safety and emission inspectors for motor vehicles. It includes regulations and test inspection procedures and is taught to insure that the student understands the rules and regulations can inspect a vehicle properly and can successfully pass qualification exams for certification as a safety and emissions inspector at a licensed inspection station. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required.

Marbled Paper Forming (8 Hours) NEW!

Marbling is a form of printing that goes back hundreds of years. Color is dropped on a medium and swirled with a variety of tools to create different designs and the print is made. This class will create unique pieces of marbled paper using food coloring, shaving cream, and card stock. Marbled paper forming is ideal for scrapbooking, handmade cards, origami boxes, and many other things. Supplies will be available the first night of class or can be purchased beforehand.

Basic Blacksmithing Class for Fun or Profit (16 Hours) NEW!

Using a gas forge, hammer and anvil, we will explore the skills involved in shaping steel. Learn twisting, texturing, bending and some basic heat treating, and combining these techniques, make both functional and decorative objects. Bring your favorite hammer and ideas of what you would like to make. You will also need to bring eye and ear protection. There will be a fee of $55 to cover materials, payable at the first class. This quilting class is designed for three types of quilters, the beginner, the novice who needs help with a project and the intermediate quilter. All you need to know is how to wind a bobbin and thread your sewing machine. You will learn how to cut, piece and sew a quilt top along with quilting your quilt and finishing it. This class will create unique crochet necklaces. Learn to use a simple chain stitch to make a piece of art for gifts or to wear day after day. Microdermabrasion Certification class (8 Hours) NEW!

In this theory and hands on class, you will learn everything you need to know about microdermabrasion facials. You will experience crystal tip treatments and learn about different treatment options, proper procedures and technique. By the end of class you will be certified and fully prepared to confidently and skillfully perform this advanced service for your clients. This 8 hour class will fulfill State Board CEU requirements, and is open to both licensed professionals and advanced cosmetology students. Learn about the history and techniques used in the 6000 year old art of threading to remove unwanted hair. Also learn how to remove excess facial hair and create elegantly arched brows that will enhance your clients face shape. This small investment can also help increase your salons earning potential. NC Concealed Carry Handgun (10 Hours)

This class provides the training and certificate needed to apply for a handgun permit at any Sheriff’s Department in NC. You must be at least 21 and a NC resident. To attend this class, you cannot have been convicted of any felonies or misdemeanor violent crimes. Bring 100 rounds of ammunition, a handgun, and holster to the firing range portion of the class ONLY. Bring a bag lunch. Space is limited so pre-register early. From 1-6 PM will be the firing range portion of the class, so do not bring firearms into the MCC campus. A fee will be required by the Sheriff’s Office in order to register for the permit. (30 minute lunch break).

Defensive Driving (4 Hours)

This program trains motorists in the principles of defensive driving and is made available by the District Attorney through Mayland Community College, Mountain Professionals, Inc. and the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina. You must register on or before 4:30PM the day of the class. Class MUST have a minimum of 5 students paid & registered to make. Classes will be canceled if class minimum isn’t met. When you come to register you must have the following information ready: driver’s license, social security number and citation (ticket).There is a non-refundable $65 class registration (cash or money order only) fee. Students 16-18 years of age must have a “Dual Enrollment Form” filled out prior to receiving a certificate.
