COMPUTER Classes

Computer Basics (24 hours)

Class is for beginners, late bloomers, and technophobes. Learn foundation skills ranging from turning on and shutting down a computer to an intro to Wordpad, Internet, Clipboard, Gmail, creating, saving, and editing documents. Students will use mouse tricks and extra keys on a keyboard to work faster and smarter. No previous computer experience needed. There are a lot of handouts so students are advised to bring a 3-ring binder to class.

Expand on basic PC knowledge. Review text editing and formatting techniques. Phlebotomy (210 Hours)

Program content includes; communication skills when working with patients, selection of venipuncture sites, care of blood specimens, record keeping, and equipment maintenance. High school diploma or GED is required. You must be at least 18 years of age. Clinical rotations will be scheduled in addition to the dates for the classes listed below. Certified Nurse Assistant I (160 Hours)

This state-required course is for those wishing to become a CNA and consists of classroom work, lab, and clinical rotations. At the end of the course a separate State approved agency does the competency testing for a fee of $102. Six days of clinical rotation (8 hours each) will be scheduled starting as early as 6:30 am. Some Saturday class and lab participation may also be required. Random drug screening and criminal background checks may be required by the clinical sites. Hours could vary slightly depending upon instructional need. Students in this class may be eligible for Project Skill-Up scholarship funds.

Therapeutic Massage (660 Hours)

This program provides Therapeutic Massage I and II, and provides participants with the basic information and skills needed to qualify to take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). Graduates who pass this exam may apply for licensure to practice in North Carolina. Students will be prepared to work in direct care settings to provide manipulation, methodical pressure, friction and kneading of the body’s soft tissues to support wellness throughout the lifespan.Graduates who become licensed should qualify for employment opportunities in hospitals and other medical settings, rehabilitation centers, sport or health clubs, retirement communities, day spas, resorts, and private practice. Admission to the program is available on a first come, first served basis and requires that the applicant be at least 18 years of age by the first day of class and a high school graduate or equivalent (GED). Students will also be required to demonstrate reading proficiency either by college transcripts, a computerized placement test, or the TA BE reading test. Physical Therapy Aide – MCC Certificate (96 hours) New!

This course provides an overview of the profession and covers key aspects of a career in physical therapy, such as physical therapy roles, practice setting, the American Physical Therapy Association, laws and policies, regulations and more. EMT-Basic (169 hours)

This course is designed for the entry level practitioner into the field of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Students will learn how to provide emergency medical care to patients suffering from various medical conditions and patients with various traumatic injuries. This class is ideal for volunteer fire, rescue, and EMS departments. Upon completion, the student will be able to test for certification with the North Carolina State Office of EMS as an EMT-Basic. Class consists of 169 hours of classroom hours. This class meets the certification requirements of the NCOEMS EMT-Basic Level. Students must hold a high school or GED diploma and successfully complete a TA BE assessment for reading comprehension at the tenth-grade level. (No class 1/20, 4/18)

This course is for students interested in becoming entry level legal secretaries or legal assistants. It provides a basic introduction into the legal field. Course topics can include, but are not limited to basic legal terminology, forms and procedures used in the general practice of a legal office along with law office technology, ethics and confidentiality. Tapping Maple/Birch Trees (3 hours) New!

This class will help you prepare for the “flow” so you will be ready to sap and boil. Learn how and when to tap the trees without having to buy equipment. And learn how to make natural spiles from sumac, recycle jugs/jars for collecting sap, and learn the old-fashioned, outside boiling down method. Beginning Clogging (12 Hours) New!

This class is for individuals with little or no dance experience. Discover the joy of clogging to live old-time music. We will jump right into this Appalachian dance tradition starting at “step one,” and each dance step will be broken down along the way. Students will leave this class with a handful of clogging steps and the tools to improvise and create your own steps. Wear smooth-soled shoes; leather bottoms work great.

Making a Wool Roving Coil Basket (3 hours) New!

Roving is cleaned and carded wool usually used by hand spinner to create yarn. Make a basket using similar technique as when they make coiled baskets from reeds or palm leaves but will be using wool instead. Using needle and wool yarn and a variety of wool rovings from the instructors sheep flock the finished baskets will then be decorated with beads and other accessories.

Beyond the Rectangle, Knitting Basics (8 Hours)

This class is for anyone who has ever wanted to learn how to knit, or has just started out and would like to create more than rectangular scarves. Beginning students will be taught the continental style of knitting. All students will produce a knitting sampler in which they learn all the basics such as casting on, binding off, increasing and decreasing stitches and manipulating knit and purl stitches to create ribbings and patterns. Time will be spent on trouble shooting, fixing mistakes, reading patterns, gauge and much more. All students will also make a pair of mittens utilizing all the skills that they have learned.

Three Dimensional Needle Felting Workshop (3 Hours)

Using only a special felting needle, foam pad and clean wool from the instructors flock, students will be introduced to the art of needle-felting. During this workshop students will learn how to shape and create using this highly popular and portable form of felting. The class will be making animal shapes, dogs, cats, birds or teddy bears. Making a Bag with Wet Felting (3 Hours)

Wet felting is one of the earliest uses of fiber and is still used today. Students will learn the basics of making felt fabric using soap, water and clean prepared wool. At the completion of the workshop students will have made a small carrying bag or pouch with a cord strap.

Have Ewe Any Wool? (3 Hours)

An introductory class for people interested in raising sheep, llamas/alpacas or goats to produce wool. The class will cover each of the fiber animals, their similarities and differences, and the requirements for their proper care and maintenance. There will also be a review of the nature of wool and the stages of taking shorn fleeces to finished goods. Elke Spirakis is the owner of Wellspring Fiber Farm in Burnsville and has raised llamas, sheep and angora goats since the early 90s.The class will take place rain or shine on the farm in the livestock barn. Find a newfound admiration for this incredible produce of nature while tasting the difference in body, tannins, and sweetness of wines. Shiitake Mushrooms: A Great Way to Celebrate Spring! (3 Hours)

Studies have shown that eating Shiitake mushrooms has health benefits. In this hands-on class you will learn how to cultivate your own edible shiitake mushrooms; learn proper inoculation techniques and growing conditions, and you can inoculate your own log. Spawn and cheese wax will be provided as part of the materials fee. Learn how to care for your logs after inoculating and how and when to harvest. Bring your own oak log (3” to 4” diameter & 2’ long) or purchase one in class. This class will be provided on a working farm (The Mushroom Hut @ Fox Farms) where you can see the how to set up a log yard. Class will be held mostly outside so dress accordingly.

Starting your own “Food Business” (3 Hours) New!

Are you a farmer wanting to “Value-Add” products or just someone wanting to know what it takes to legally make and sell food items at a Farmers’ Market? It is true in order to sell food you need to make the food in a State “Certified” Kitchen. This and other state rules and regulations such as fees, moisture and acidity testing rules, inspections and more will be discussed. The focus will be mostly on jams/jellies and baked goods but, will provide info on “pickled” foods and more as well as drying or dehydrating foods. Other topics include using the home kitchen, building an on-site kitchen facility using repurposed material, and resources for selling/marketing your finished product. The workshop will be held on a working farm with an On-Farm Kitchen Facility (The Mushroom Hut @ Fox Farms).

Cake Decorating with Fondant (12 Hours)

Learn the basics of fondant and how to make and decorate with fondant flowers and borders. Students will be asked to bake cakes at home and bring them to class, and students will also need to bring their own frosting as well as the fondant. Supply list will be provided. Herbal Medicine for Women’s Health (4 Hours) New!

This class is geared to the needs of women, in particular reproductive issues. Topics covered will include hormonal imbalances such as PMS, menopausal symptoms, infertility, frequent miscarriages, and menstrual irregularity and discomfort. Herbs helpful in pregnancy and birth will be discussed, as well as those to avoid. Defensive Driving (4 Hours)

Eliminate points for tickets! Complete this 4-hour defensive driving course to reduce the effects of minor traffic violations. This class is made available by the District Attorney through Mayland Community College, Mountain Professionals, Inc., and the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina. You must register before 4:30PM on the day of the class and bring the following: driver’s license, social security number, the citation (ticket), and $65 cash or money order. (Non-refundable) Students 16-18 years of age must have a “Dual Enrollment Form” filled out prior to receiving a certificate. This form may be found on the MCC website www.mayland.edu. Click “Continuing Education” and choose “Forms” in the box on right. Class MUST have a minimum of 5 students paid & registered to make. Classes will be canceled if class minimum isn’t met.

Classes are held at Yancey Center for Ceramic Art (YCCA ). Please call 682-7315 for information. Additional fees to be paid to YCCA on the first day of class include: $75 Firing and Lab fee; Clay $14 per 25 lbs; Optional tool kit $18.50.

Clay Works (40 Hours)

Explore your creative capabilities. The possibilities of clay creativity is limited only by your imagination. Learn the basics of working with clay in handbuilding and throwing on the wheel. Learn to alter pieces, decorate and glaze to create your own special pottery. This class works well for those with some experience and for beginners.

Combination Clay (40 Hours)

This class will incorporate handbulding techniques as well as throwing on the wheel. A great class for exploring the world of clay and its many creative capabilities. Learn at your own pace as your pursue your interest and create your special pieces of pottery. Learn how to decorate and glaze your pieces to achieve your own special look.
