Mayland Community College is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge section of the Appalachian Mountains on the Avery/Mitchell county line just outside the town of Spruce Pine. Mayland has been serving Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey counties for over 40 years.

With the most recent rating by Bankrate.com, Mayland Community College has solidified its position this summer of being in the top 1% of community colleges nationwide.
Recently Bankrate.com undertook the task of ranking two-year community colleges and technical centers around the country to see where students could get the best, most affordable start in their college careers. Mayland Community College ranked 9th in the nation in the top community colleges; a story carried by many news agencies including ABC News and Yahoo.com.
“I think it is wonderful and somewhat incredible that in this small rural mountain community, a top 1% community college is here to serve our residents,” said Mayland Community College President John C. Boyd.
Glen Raven Supports MCC Building Efforts!
Mayland Community College is pleased to announce that Glen Raven, Inc. has made a commitment to support the construction of Mayland's new Anspach Advanced Manufacturing School.
“Mayland Community College celebrates Glen Raven’s long history in Yancey County,” said Mayland Community College President John C. Boyd. “Glen Raven’s recent commitment will lead to the naming of the Glen Raven Classroom in the Anspach Advanced Manufacturing School.”
MCC hosts Telemedicine services for students & employees
If you need to see a doctor, but have no time to miss class or work, medical services are now available in the Health Sciences Facility room 114 on campus. Partnering with MY Health-e-Schools Telemedicine Program, the health sciences program serves students as well as faculty and staff, providing many services including treatment of acute care illnesses such as the common sore throat, earache, cough or stomach ache, Pre-scheduled school related physical forms completed, chronic disease management, medication management and telepsychology/telebehavioral health and many others to come. MY Health-e-Schools functions just like a regular doctor's office. Insurance claims are filed; with co-pays and deductibles billed to the patient. There is also a sliding scale fee for those without insurance. Best of all, students enrolled in health science programs gain valuable experience working with medical professionals as they are placed in real-life scenarios. MCC is now 100% tobacco free
Effective August 1st, 2013 Mayland Community College is a 100% Tobacco-Free Campus (the policy includes automobiles and also applies to the Avery Learning Center in Newland and the Yancey Learning Center in Burnsville). Read the policy here.
Mayland Anspach Advanced Manufacturing School Groundbreaking
Celebrating community, excellence and opportunity, Mayland Community College held a groundbreaking ceremony at the college’s Yancey Learning Center for the Anspach Advanced Manufacturing School on October 8. Construction on the new addition at the Yancey Learning Center is expected to begin later this year.

2013 Academic Excellence Recipient: Brian Pham
To Brian Pham, one meaning of freedom is being able to pursue a good education. Pham, who was born in Vietnam and came to the United States in 1998 with his parents and sister, is Mayland Community College’s 2013 North Carolina Community College System’s Academic Excellence Award recipient. After helping put his sister through college, getting married, running a business, and having a son and daughter, Brian decided he wanted to build a strong foundation for his family’s future and stared by enrolling at Mayland...
Free Everyday Life Skills Class!
Mayland Community College is offering a new Everyday Life Skills Class for adults at the Avery Learning Center in Newland. Everyday life skills are things many take for granted, but for some adults, learning to read a calendar, food labels, and count change are obtainable goals that give life purpose and meaning.
This free class covers a wide variety of material including functional academics, community living, health and safety, and leisure and humanities. Students will set personal goals and learn how to meet them. Students will also participate in extended enrichment activities including arts and crafts, games, and field trips. The class, in collaboration with Avery Transportation, will travel to Mayland’s Main Campus for monthly haircuts and manicures at no charge. They will also go on trips to Boone where they will bowl or catch a movie, and have lunch at a local restaurant.Click HERE for more information
