News, Changes, and Updates

Eligibility of Students Without a High School Diploma​

In order to be eligible for federal student aid, students enrolling in higher education for the first time on or after July 1, 2012, must have either a high school diploma or a recognized equivalent (such as a General Educational Development certificate (GED®) or have been home-schooled).

Expected Family Contribution

​The lower a student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the higher the student's federal student aid eligibility.  A change has been made to the income amount that is used to determine if a student qualifies for an automatic EFC of zero.  Currently, students will qualify for an EFC of zero if the reported family income does not exceed $23,000.  This is a reduction from the precious maximum income of $32,000.

Federal Pell Grant Program - Duration of Eligibility

The lifetime maximum amount of time that a student can receive a Pell Grant is now 12 fulltime semesters or the equivalent.  Equivalency is calculated by adding together the percentage of Pell eligibility that a student receives each year.  When the total amount a student receives equals 600%, that student will no longer be eligible for a Pell Grant.

Direct Student Loan Changes

Beginning July 1, 2013, Mayland Community College will no longer participate in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program.  Click here for more information.

IRS Data Retrieval Tool on the FAFSA

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is now a permanent part of the FAFSA filing process.  This tool allows students and parents to transfer tax information from the IRS directly into the FAFSA application.  This process makes the FAFSA application easier to complete and ensures that the application is more accurate.​

​In order to utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, students and parents must file their Federal tax return and allow up to three weeks for the IRS to process the return before attempting to complete the FAFSA. 

Under certain circumstances, some students and parents may not be eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.  In this case, students and/or parents may be required to obtain tax return transcripts from the IRS for verification purposes. 

Financial Aid Made Easy 

Applying for financial aid can be intimidating.  You know you should apply, but submitting the FAFSA can be complicated and confusing.  The FAFSA Tutorial can help!  This tutorial gives you step by step instructions for submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), making it as easy as 1-2-3.  (The tutorial is geared to the 14-15 FAFSA, but the instructions are the same for the 13-14 FAFSA.)

All students planning to attend the 2014 Spring and/or Summer Semester(s) should complete the 2013-2014 FAFSA, using 2012 financial information.​  Students planning to attend the Fall 2014 Semester should complete the 2014-2015 FAFSA, using 2013 financial information.

The Financial Aid Priority Deadlines for students enrolling during Priority Registration are as follows:

2014 Summer Semester - April 30​

2014 Fall Semester - June 30​

To ensure processing of financial aid ​before the last day to pay for Priority Registration students, the correct FAFSA and all required documentation must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office on or before the dates posted above.

Purchasing Textbooks with Pell

When can I purchase my textbooks using Pell and what is the process?

Students may purchase textbooks for each semester using their Pell Grant award on or after the date published by the Financial Aid Office prior to the beginning of that particular semester.  To purchase books using Pell, simply provide the Bookstore with a copy of your class schedule and your student ID number and let them know that you want to charge your books to your student account.


2014 Spring Pell Grant Disbursement Schedule

First 2014 Spring Semester Disbursement - February 14

For students who chose the Higher One card method of disbursement, funds will be available on February 14.  Students who chose either the direct deposit method or the check method will receive their funds 2 - 7 days after the disbursement date, depending on which method was chosen. 

Students enrolled in Developmental Math/Reading modules with a late start date will not be paid financial aid for those classes until after class has started and attendance has been verified.  At that point, if needed, financial aid will be adjusted to reflect the addition of another class.  If a student receives financial aid for a late start class but fails to attend beyond the 10% point of that class, the student may be required to repay any aid received for the class.  These regulations also apply to students enrolled in college level courses that are offered as mini-mesters, such as BIO 165 and BIO 166

For students enrolled in late start modules or mini-mester courses, financial aid will be disbursed monthly after the initial February 14 disbursement date.  Disbursement dates vary, but each will occur towards the end of the month.  Students who are scheduled to receive additional financial aid refunds will receive an email from Higher One once the disbursement has been made. ​

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy

(How Grades Affect Your Financial Aid at MCC)

Here are the highlights of the SAP Policy:

*A student whose cumulative GPA and/or cumulatvie completion rate drops below the minimum standards of 2.0 or 67% will be placed on Warning and will have one semester to achieve the minimum standards while continuing to receive financial aid.

*Students who fail to meet the minimum standards at the end of the Warning semester will be placed in Unsatisfactory and will no longer be eligible to receive financial aid without completing a successful appeal.

*Students who complete a successful appeal will be placed on Probation and will be required to participate in an academic plan in order to regain financial aid eligibility.

*The lifetime maximum number of appeals a student can complete due to not achieving the minimum GPA or completion rate standards is limited to two (2).

*Students receiving financial aid are required to complete their program of study within 150% of the published length of the program.  Students who exceed the 150% timeframe are not eligible to receive financial aid without completing a successful appeal.

*The lifetime maximum number of appeals a student can complete due to exceeding the 150% maximum timeframe rule is one (1).
